World Health Day – Diet, Fitness, and Healthy Lifestyle Should be the Focus

While you may hear about World Health Day and the focus on such debatable claims like ‘global warming’ and the challenges faced with a rise in the Earth’s temperature, but there are bigger issues at stake. For starters, the health of mankind needs to be mentioned from a diet and fitness level. Although this may sound much less important than trying to eradicate deadly diseases like AIDS or malaria, the fact is that many more diseases will be present and many more lives at stake in years to come, without a focus on a quality food supply. Just because mankind can be fed, doesn’t mean that mankind is going to be healthy, only perhaps survive another day. Without wholesome foods grown on good quality soil full of nutrients and trace minerals and the like, the immune systems of all living things could be compromised to the point of making a common cold a common risk of death. Sounds extreme but even HIV positive patients see a great benefit to a very strict diet that enhances their immune system and leaves out processed foods that can deplete its strength.

How is it that food could be the basis for good health for all? Is it the hundreds of nutrients present in whole foods that we don’t hear about or aren’t talked about? Maybe these healthy sources of nutrition are overshadowed by marketing efforts of the big burger places and soft drink makers. A healthy diet and lifestyle should be the focus of World Health Day, instead of what citizens are doing that may be raising the temperature of the Earth.  Sure we need to make diseases like Malaria and Small Pox obsolete. Anything that we have vaccines for should be practically non-existent with a concerted effort. But the big problem that supercedes these is the foundation of health – diet. What you decide to eat will determine whether or not we, together, the farmers that provide fruits and vegetables will still be in existence in years to come. They won’t be needed if they have a product that no one wants. Make the choice to eat more fruits and vegetables. Increase the demand, while decreasing the demand for hamburgers, soft drinks, potato chips, or any other processed foods. The collective choices of the citizens of the planet is what ultimately will decide where the future of the World lies.

The World Health Organization (WHO) was (apparently) founded on this day, and I suppose that’s the reason for this day as World Health Day.  Maybe a healthy diet day should be started to help increase awareness of what a healthy diet really is. Is it french fries, hot dogs, pizza, soft drinks, cereal (and I don’t mean Oatmeal here!), and pastries? Most of the foods offered that have been pre-packaged – that is, already made and can be eaten out of the box or heated – are missing hundreds of important nutrients for supporting your health. There isn’t one food or soft drink manufacturer or fast food restaurant that would be behind a World Healthy Diet Day as described. They would lose hundreds of millions of dollars just in one day.

With a healthy diet you can expect weight loss if you need it; you can expect more energy if you seek it; you can expect your IQ to go up if you want it. You may see your income go up, your relationships improve (oh yeah? you don’t think your sex life is better with more energy and a slimmer body?), your creative thoughts and productivity as a person may improve. These are all things, and more, that have been noticed by individuals who make the effort to improve their health by changing what they eat. A healthy diet plan is just the beginning to a healthy lifestyle.

Ya think?

So what they learned is that if you teach kids about healthy eating habits and exercise and you make those foods available for them and GET RID of the junk; i.e. Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Snicker’s bars (w/ or without caffiene aka Snicker’s Charged and it’s 60 MG of Caffiene!) that kids lose weight? well knock me over with a feather!

Our world is really messed up. I got this email from a friend the other day:

Corporate America owns chain restaurants. Moms and Pops own smaller restaurants. The restaurants enter into contracts with soda manufacturers who pay out (sometimes large incentive amounts) to the restaurants to procure exclusive soda sales rights. The restaurants sell soda at prices cheaper than milk or even tea in some cases. The restaurants sell soda in larger servings than those accorded other drinks. The restaurants will provide free re-fills for the sodas, but not for the healthier alternatives, i.e. milk. This is especially problematic for parents on a budget.

Thus, their children end of being served larger quantities of the soda for a cheaper price, effectively “habitizing” the children to drink soda in rediculous quantities at an earlier age. My kids were charged $2.50 per glass of milk at a recent lunch. They each had two glasses. That is $20 for milk at lunch. Unlimited soda would have cost $5. The lunch for the four kids cost $24.00, excluding the drinks.

$35 gross cost of lunch with soda
$53 gross cost of lunch with milk
$18 increase in the cost of a lunch for four kids at a mid range restaurant just to avoid having the kids consume soda. That is an increase of over 50% to avoid having your kids poisoned by soda.

Ritalin has Consequences

Almost everyone seems to know someone who has a child on Ritalin. As you may know, use of Ritalin doesn’t come without risk. As with any drug, there are unwanted side-effects that can occur. Even with the research and studies showing such promising results for children with Attention Deficit Disorder, all drugs come with side-effects and can even be life threatening.

While this author doesn’t necessarily agree that Ritalin is the answer to ADD, the drug companies have certainly capitalized on the deficit children seem to be in.  But I think that “deficit” comes from the lack of physical activity – the kind away from a computer or TV.  Getting out and observing those things that are not digital is such a key to having a calmer and more focused mind. According to the Medical Observer, “children who use Ritalin for a long period of time could be more at risk of deliquency and substance abuse.” For this reason they suggest ‘taking a break’ from the drug after 3 years, because “the more days of prescribed medication, the more serious the risk.”

It is the opinion of The Health & Wellness Institute that a diet that is deficient in proper nutrients – i.e. fruits and vegetables – and filled with stimulants like sugar and caffeine, will also contribute to the symptoms of those diagnosed with ADD.  This evidence is shown in studies where children were put on a healthy diet and after a year the results showed better grades, less conflict, less absences, and more participation in school activities. While there may not be a direct relationship between the two, there should be at least some logical deduction that diet plays a big role in the health of the mind and therefore should provide noticeable benefit to those with ADD.

Bottom line: a diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables, and without processed foods, high amounts of sugars – i.e. soft drinks or fruit drinks – and even including some regular exercise, will always be beneficial to anyone, no matter what condition they may be diagnosed with.

Rehab a Prisoner with a Healthy Diet and Meal Plan like Medifast

This should be part of the focus of ‘rehabilitating’ a convicted criminal – learning to live with a healthy diet and healthy lifestyle. Here is a study that will be done in prisons because of some successful results seen in a previous study…

SUPPLEMENTS are all the rage: evening primrose oil; St John’s wort; fish oils; glucosamine; selenium; zinc; iron; molybdenum; probiotics. And don’t forget those old standbys, multivitamin tablets. It is hard to walk through a pharmacy without seeing a promise of clearer skin, a stronger immune system or less squeaky joints. But what about a pill or potion to make you better behaved?

That is exactly the intention of a study led by John Stein, a professor of neuroscience at Oxford University, that is about to start in three British prisons. Not only is there a growing body of evidence that good nutrition can improve behaviour, there is also a theoretical basis for supposing that a lack of essential nutrients has an impact on the way the brain works.

Dr Stein believes that the proper functioning of nerve-cell membranes and signalling molecules depends on adequate supplies of minerals, vitamins and fatty acids. To test the idea, his team will recruit 1,000 prisoners. Half of them will receive these supplements, while the others receive a placebo. Neither prisoners nor experimenters will know who got what until the trial is over.

The trial will replicate, on a larger scale, a study carried out by Natural Justice, a British charity, and published in the British Journal of Psychiatry in 2002. Then, 231 volunteers were given either capsules containing their official daily requirements of vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids (such as omega-3s) or placebos. The trial lasted for nine months and during that time the number of offences committed by each prisoner was recorded. Those who received the extra nutrients committed an average of 26.3% fewer offences than those who got the placebo. For violent offences, the reduction was 37%.

Burger lovers beware: People who eat red meat every day have a higher risk of dying over a 10-year period — mostly because of cardiovascular disease or cancer –than their peers who eat less red or processed meat, according to a new study of about half a million people.

People who ate the most red meat had about a 30 percent greater risk of dying than those who ate the least.

"This is the biggest and highest quality study like this," says Barry M. Popkin, Ph.D., from the University of North Carolina, who wrote an editorial accompanying the study, which was published Monday in Archives of Internal Medicine. "They collected the diet data very carefully, and it's saying to people, 'You don't have to eat red meat every day."

In the study, a research team led by Rashmi Sinha, Ph.D., from the National Cancer Institute in Rockville, Maryland, looked at more than 500,000 people who were aged 50 to 71 when they enrolled in the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health study.

Over a 10-year period, people who ate the most red meat every day (about 62.5 grams per 1,000 calories per day, equivalent to a quarter-pound burger or small steak per day) had about a 30 percent greater risk of dying compared with those who consumed the least amount of red meat (a median of 9.8 grams per 1,000 calories per day). The excess mortality was mostly the result of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Read more…

Lastly, with more Americans choosing to live healthy, the rising costs of health care will eventually subside. Why? Because drug companies will put their focus on those conditions that have the highest need, instead of trying to create a pill for every so called health 'problem' that has a ICD code – that is a diagnostic code (here's a reference to give you some idea — ICD Codes. 'Health Care' has gotten so out of hand, and probably abused, from visits for a sniffle to a stubbed toe, that the industry has exploited the very existence of human beings, practically labelling anyone as unhealthy or posessing some sort of condition that requires a subscription or other intervention, until proven otherwise. Sounds absurd, but if you take a look at the number of conditions that there is a diagnostic code for, you'll understand. So with more Americans focused on taking responsibility for their own health and doing what's necessary to live healthy, the demand for health care goes down, and hence the cost.

While health care reform is not a bad thing, the basic premise of reform for sake of getting everyone access to 'health care' should not be the final goal. Certainly, making health care affordable is not such a bad goal, but going about it with a shotgun approach (just shooting/cutting/eliminating everything that looks expensive or unnecessary) is not productive either.

Here's a somewhat general idea that should be followed if reform is to be done. One, a full analysis of drugs that are on the market and their costs should be done – to determine a) the degree of importance, and b) the reimbursement rate. Obviously, medications like antiobiotics may be one of the more important to make the list, and certainly some chemotherapy ones, as examples. These types of drugs could be classified as those that get a different reimbursement rate, while those that are not life-saving get a different one. That way, only those that offer some form of 'real' treatment for a 'real' problem are fully paid for, while those that just 'help' a symptom are not. A second and probably not so popular guideline, would be to cap the lawsuits that are brought against doctors and insurers. Let's face it, if you're not a lawyer, you'd probably agree with the general attitude most people have toward lawyers. Why is it that someone always has to pay when someone gets hurt, only with the lawyers getting most of it anyway. When it comes down to it, lawsuits have been a big reason for the rising costs of health care. Just ask a doctor why his or her premiums are so high. Some doctors don't want to practice in some states because their premiums have sored so high with their specialty. Lawsuits have made only one profession richer – lawyers. And lastly, make a mandate that every person be given a physical exam to determine their level of health and fitness (subject to certain criteria, of course). Those who are healthy would pay less for health care, while those who are not pay more. Aren't those who are healthy now essentially footing a portion of the bill for those who aren't? Ok, we aren't a heartless society that doesn't help those less fortunate, but in some way there needs to be incentive or some sort of mandate for healthy living. Be it employer programs that require 1 hour a day 3 times a week for exercise, or a specific diet implementation – even if it's just required fruit and vegetable consumption – that can be followed, and where real results can be measured…that may make a big difference.

Bottom line: Don't wait for some government reform to make life better for you, no matter what the issue. Take charge and responsibility, as you have Unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. It is in your best interest to pursue a life of health and fitness.
