More Laws Less Freedom, Possibly Poorer Health

Every year in every country, state, province, and city, there are more laws written and proposed – some passed, some not – for the sake of providing a better and more controlled and stable place to live. The real reason that more laws are proposed is to give some politicians importance and purpose when most of the time they just aren’t necessary. The 63,000 plus pages of tax code should be indication of this fact. Among the changes proposed by the bill are radical alterations to key terminology, including replacing the word “drug” with “therapeutic product” throughout the Act, thereby giving the Canadian government broad-reaching powers to regulate the sale of all herbs, vitamins, supplements and other items. With this single language change, anything that is “therapeutic” automatically falls under the Food and Drug Act. This would include bottled water, blueberries, dandelion greens and essentially all plant-derived substances.

Conference Chair, the Director of the CSIRO Preventative Health National Research Flagship Dr Richard Head, says that better understanding human genes and cellular function will provide us with better ways of understanding chronic diseases and retarding or contributing to their prevention. This is of interest to the broader biomedical community including those involved in nutrition and food sciences.

The conference will feature a thorough review of current science in the area, presented by leading international experts in the field, as well as exploring industry perspectives and regulatory issues. The areas covered in the Conference include the interaction of diet and genes in obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and inflammation. Low Income Equals Poor Diet – Is Medifast Affordable?

t’s one of those familiar sayings – you think you can’t afford to eat ‘well’, but really you can’t afford NOT to! It turns out that low income families have poor dietary habits, eating more processed foods and less fruits and vegetables (although it is a studied fact that the majority – like 95% – of Americans don’t get the minimum recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables, so this may be a mute point!).  But the reality is that if you want to get out of poverty, you’ve got to strive for better. These two variables are the start of building a foundation of a healthy life. A better diet means the brain functions better. Just the discipline of striving for good health will create a ripple effect into other areas of life – doing a better job at work, setting goals to ‘move up’ and get promoted, more creative thought, improved relationships, and so on. What is the #1 cause of death? Death.  Yes, death is the #1 cause. Everyone will die, unless we figure out how to play with genetics, aging, the mind, and things beyond the physical world for sure. We’re so busy avoiding the inevitable instead of making the quality and joy of living much more fulfilling that we’ve forgotten about the opportunities that exist to pursue of life of health, happiness and prosperity.  We need to be so busy ignoring the obvious – those things that are obviously compromising our health – and start relying on healthy choices to provide and support most everything we need to be healthy (save those few instances when antibiotics are needed).

Diet can mean everything when it comes to matters of the mind or body. Eat how you want to feel. That is, if you want to feel sluggish, tired, run-down, lackadaisical, ‘foggy’, unsure, unclear, uncertain, and/or unhealthy, then you want to eat plenty of fast food, french fries, milk shakes, candy bars, pizza, burritos, soft drinks, potato chips, and oh yeah hot dogs. But if you want to feel energized, clear-headed, productive, creative, and start to discover your full potential, then your diet will consist of lots of fruits and vegetables, lots of nutrient-dense foods (fruits and vegetables again), water-rich foods (fruits and vegetables), and plenty of lean protein sources (fish, beans), and of course water as your #1 beverage. Even supplementing your diet with whole food based nutrients to be sure you’re getting enough antioxidant support is good.

Overall, focusing on the quality of life is more important, and a positive approach to health, than trying to avoid, fix, heal, or cure what ails you after the fact. And leaving your cure in the hands of doctors or drugs is just as much a negative approach than trying to correct your diet and lifestyle. So start making healthy choices and living your life to its fullest!

Diet Drugs Dangerous, Medifast Not

A drug that could have negative (side) effects? This doesn’t seem possible. I’m willing to bet that if 98% of the prescription medications on the market today were taken OFF the market, health problems would go down and less people would die than normally expected. Now it comes as some sort of surprise that a diet drug could be dangerous for children and their brain development. Unless it’s life threatening, or a quality of life is severely compromised, and no natural methods of intervention can or does help, then drug intervention should be considered (bacteria infections would be a perfect example; so would diabetes Type I; or anesthesia for surgery). But a drug to help combat obesity is practically a license to (pardun the pun) have the cake and eat (the whole thing) too! (Foodconsumer.org) — Anti-obesity drugs that work by blocking brain molecules similar to those in marijuana should not be used in children, a new animal study reported in the May 8 issue of Neuron suggests.

Scientists from MIT’s Picower Institute for Learning and Memory found drugs of this sort could block cannabinoid receptors and also suppress the adaptive rewiring of the brain necessary for neural development in children.

Rimonabant (trade name Acomplia) developed by Sanofi-Aventis and awaiting approval for use in the United States is one such drug that works by blocking brain receptors that bind to marijuana and other cannabinoids. read on….

Bottom line: a healthy diet and regular exercise will be the best “treatment” and prevention for obesity, along with a large percentage of health problems.

Frozen produce is nutritionally comparable to fresh but canned produce does lose some vitamins and minerals during the heating process. However, the canned versions of at least three vegetables are actually higher in healthful phytochemicals than their fresh versions: Corn, carrots, and tomatoes all benefit from the canning process.

Another benefit of frozen and canned produce: They have a longer shelf life, so you can keep them on hand for quick additions to meals.

If you do purchase more canned or frozen produce, make sure the label says they contain no added salt and sugars. (Remember “heavy syrup”?)

Bottom line: It’s more important to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day than it is to worry about how they made it to your plate.

Does Medifast have the Nutrition?

While weight loss in itself is a goal that most people strive for, it is not and should not be the focus of a healthy lifestyle – one that includes a healthy weight. Anyone who tells you that your diet won’t make a difference in your health either has been living in a cave their whole life or… well, who knows. The fact is that with so much evidence pointing to the importance of a healthy diet in the prevention of sickness and disease, it is clear that most of our health problems stem from poor nutrition. What's in Your Lunch? Is it a Diet or Health Food?

Asking what’s in your lunch may be a bit presumptive that you even have a lunch to look into, as if you’ve brought one.  Most people we find not bringing their own lunch to work, but instead buying.  In my experience, not only is buying more expensive to you and adds up quickly if you’re on a budget, but it’s most often compromising to your health, especially when you can better control what you’re going to eat when you make your own at home. You can get what you need at the supermarket, prepare it exactly how you like it, and be sure that the fruit and or vegetable that you want is included. And believe me, all of this is going to be cheaper than going somewhere and having someone prepare your sandwich. And if it’s not more expensive, then be assured that it is certainly “garbage” that you’re eating (i.e. fast food?).

According to Michael Pollan, most of what Americans consume isn’t food. He calls it “edible foodlike substances.” He also says that the way we consume it is not really eating. It’s something we do pretty unconsciously as we work or drive or watch TV.  We all know about the U.S. epidemic of obesity and diabetes over the past 25 years, on top of the steady rise of chronic diseases over the past hundred. Paradoxically, this happens just as Americans and the food industry are ever more aware of nutrition. What’s going on here?  Pollan claims that in the Western diet, good old food has been replaced by nutrients, mom’s good advice by nutritional experts, common sense by confusion, and for most, a relatively good diet by a bad and dangerous one. The book in which he makes all these claims and advises us simply to “Eat Food. Not too much. Mostly plants,” has topped the New York Times bestseller list. (from AlterNet.org)

Comments: Bottom line, most of what is offered at supermarkets, sporting events, bowling alleys, quick shops, fast food restaurants, and everywhere that has a shelf with a food item on it, is just not the best nutrition for our health. Start with those items that come from the garden, or the orchard.

While you may hear about World Health Day and the focus on such debatable claims like ‘global warming’ and the challenges faced with a rise in the Earth’s temperature, but there are bigger issues at stake. For starters, the health of mankind needs to be mentioned from a diet and fitness level. Although this may sound much less important than trying to eradicate deadly diseases like AIDS or malaria, the fact is that many more diseases will be present and many more lives at stake in years to come, without a focus on a quality food supply. Just because mankind can be fed, doesn’t mean that mankind is going to be healthy, only perhaps survive another day. Without wholesome foods grown on good quality soil full of nutrients and trace minerals and the like, the immune systems of all living things could be compromised to the point of making a common cold a common risk of death. Sounds extreme but even HIV positive patients see a great benefit to a very strict diet that enhances their immune system and leaves out processed foods that can deplete its strength.

How is it that food could be the basis for good health for all? Is it the hundreds of nutrients present in whole foods that we don’t hear about or aren’t talked about? Maybe these healthy sources of nutrition are overshadowed by marketing efforts of the big burger places and soft drink makers. It’s not unrealistic to think that society will lose many of the nutrients that are very important to supporting good health and preventing disease much the same way that certain species are now extinct. Afterall, genetically modified seeds have made their way into the food system in a BIG way.  What effect is this having? Will we know anytime soon?

A healthy diet and lifestyle should be the focus of World Health Day, instead of what citizens are doing that may be raising the temperature of the Earth.  Sure we need to make diseases like Malaria and Small Pox obsolete. Anything that we have vaccines for should be practically non-existent with a concerted effort. But the big problem that supercedes these is the foundation of health – diet. What you decide to eat will determine whether or not we, together, the farmers that provide fruits and vegetables will still be in existence in years to come. They won’t be needed if they have a product that no one wants. Make the choice to eat more fruits and vegetables. Increase the demand, while decreasing the demand for hamburgers, soft drinks, potato chips, or any other processed foods. The collective choices of the citizens of the planet is what ultimately will decide where the future of the World lies.

The World Health Organization (WHO) was (apparently) founded on this day, and I suppose that’s the reason for this day as World Health Day.  Maybe a healthy diet day should be started to help increase awareness of what a healthy diet really is. Is it french fries, hot dogs, pizza, soft drinks, cereal (and I don’t mean Oatmeal here!), and pastries? Most of the foods offered that have been pre-packaged – that is, already made and can be eaten out of the box or heated – are missing hundreds of important nutrients for supporting your health. There isn’t one food or soft drink manufacturer or fast food restaurant that would be behind a World Healthy Diet Day as described. They would lose hundreds of millions of dollars just in one day.

With a healthy diet you can expect weight loss if you need it; you can expect more energy if you seek it; you can expect your IQ to go up if you want it. You may see your income go up, your relationships improve (oh yeah? you don’t think your sex life is better with more energy and a slimmer body?), your creative thoughts and productivity as a person may improve.
